VAT Registration & Filing Services in UAE
Complete VAT registration and ongoing compliance support for UAE businesses under the Federal Tax Authority's VAT regime.
Navigating UAE VAT Requirements
Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in the United Arab Emirates on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5%, administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Since its introduction, VAT compliance has become a fundamental obligation for businesses across the UAE — both those required to register and those that choose to register voluntarily.
Failing to register on time, filing inaccurate VAT returns, or maintaining inadequate records can result in significant FTA penalties. At SR Brothers Business Setup, we assist UAE businesses with VAT registration, return filing preparation, and ensuring their ongoing VAT compliance obligations are properly managed.
Key Elements of the UAE VAT System
Understanding the core mechanics of UAE VAT is essential for every business operating in the country.
Standard Rate: 5%
UAE VAT is levied at a standard rate of 5% on most taxable supplies of goods and services. This is one of the lowest VAT rates globally and applies to the majority of commercial transactions in the UAE.
Registration Thresholds
Mandatory registration is required when taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 annually. Voluntary registration is available for businesses with taxable supplies above AED 187,500. Registration below AED 187,500 is not permitted.
Return Filing Periods
VAT returns are typically filed quarterly, due by the 28th day after the period end. The FTA may assign monthly filing periods to certain businesses. Returns and payments are submitted through the FTA's EmaraTax portal.
Zero-Rated Supplies
Certain supplies are VAT at 0%, including exports of goods outside the GCC, international transport services, some healthcare services, some educational services, and investment grade precious metals. Businesses can recover input VAT on costs related to zero-rated supplies.
Exempt Supplies
Certain supplies are exempt from VAT, including residential property rental, bare land supplies, local passenger transport, and certain financial services. Businesses making exempt supplies cannot recover input VAT attributable to those exempt activities.
Record Keeping
VAT-registered businesses must retain VAT records for at least 5 years (15 years for real estate). Records include tax invoices, credit notes, import/export documents, and VAT return workings, all subject to potential FTA audit.
UAE VAT Registration Process
VAT registration in the UAE is conducted through the Federal Tax Authority's EmaraTax online portal and involves several key steps.
Eligibility Assessment
Confirm whether your business meets the mandatory registration threshold or qualifies for voluntary registration based on your historical and projected taxable supply figures.
Document Preparation
Compile the required documentation including trade licence copies, passport and Emirates ID of owners, financial statements or bank statements evidencing taxable supplies, and details of business activities.
EmaraTax Application
Submit the VAT registration application through the FTA EmaraTax portal with all required information and supporting documentation accurately completed.
TRN Issuance
Upon approval by the FTA, your Tax Registration Number (TRN) is issued. The TRN must be quoted on all tax invoices issued to customers from the effective registration date.
Ongoing Filing & Compliance
Quarterly or monthly VAT returns must be filed accurately and on time. We assist in preparing VAT return workings from your bookkeeping records and ensuring all reporting obligations are met.
Frequently Asked Questions on UAE VAT
Practical answers to common questions about VAT registration and compliance requirements in the UAE.
Businesses with annual taxable supplies exceeding AED 375,000 are required to register for VAT with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Businesses with taxable supplies between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000 may apply for voluntary VAT registration. Businesses below the AED 187,500 threshold are not eligible to register for VAT.
Zero-rated supplies are taxable at a 0% rate. Businesses making zero-rated supplies can still recover input VAT on their related costs. Examples include exports of goods, international transport, and certain food items and healthcare services. Exempt supplies, on the other hand, are outside the scope of VAT and businesses making exempt supplies cannot recover input VAT associated with those supplies. Examples include residential property rental and local passenger transport.
Most VAT-registered businesses in the UAE are required to file VAT returns quarterly. The FTA may assign monthly filing periods to certain businesses based on their turnover level or the nature of their activities. VAT returns and any VAT due must be submitted and paid through the FTA's EmaraTax portal by the 28th day following the end of the tax period.
The UAE FTA imposes penalties for VAT non-compliance. These include fines for failing to register for VAT by the required date, penalties for late filing of VAT returns, and surcharges on late payment of VAT due. Penalties can also be levied for errors in VAT returns, failure to maintain proper records, and issuing non-compliant tax invoices. The specific penalty amounts are set out in Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2021 on Administrative Penalties for Violations.
Yes. A business may apply to deregister from VAT if its taxable supplies have fallen below the mandatory registration threshold of AED 375,000 for a continuous 12-month period, or if it ceases to make taxable supplies. Voluntary deregistration is not permitted if the business reasonably expects its taxable supplies to exceed the voluntary registration threshold in the next 30 days. Deregistration requires a final VAT return to be submitted and any outstanding VAT settled.
